The State of Chiapas is located in the southern region of the country

The State of Chiapas is located in the southern region of the country.

It is divided into 118 municipalities; 19,453 villages.  It has a population of 3,920,892 (1,941,880 male and 1,979,012 female).

The capital city is Tuxtla Gutiérrez and it lies at 520 meters (1,705 feet) above sea level.

SECTOR STRUCTURE OF ECONOMIC ACTIVITY IN 1998

The State of Chiapas had 120,130 operating economic units in 1998.  Among these, commercial establishments stood out in number, with 60,598 units, most of them were commercial retail operations.  There were 31,258 units (26%) engaged in providing private services, predominantly restaurants, small food businesses, home-style food to go establishments, beauty salons, auto repair shops and breweries.

The manufacturing industry accounted for 13,467 economic units in the state.  Among these, there were: coffee processing plants and petrochemical complexes; also, tortilla makers, blacksmiths and printing shops were scattered in neighborhoods and villages.
